LPN – The Right Career Choice?

LPN stands for Licensed Practical Nurse and is the initial nursing qualification.  In order to qualify as an LPN you must undertake a course on a training program which has been approved by the State Board of Nursing. The course is usually 18 months to two years long but can be as short as 12 months.

At the end of the training course, prospective candidates must pass an examination.  The licensing examination is called the NCLEX-PN and is essential if you wish to go on and practice as a nurse.

Once licensed the nurse can undertake a variety of both simple and complex medical procedures, but should only do so under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or a physician.

Usually, before being admitted to an approved training program you must demonstrate as a minimum that you have a high school diploma and do not have a criminal record, although increasingly, possibly as demand for the qualification grows, there are training courses which will accept you on the course without high school diploma, indeed in some cases students can start LPN programs while still in high school through vocational programs.

There are many approved training schools providing the necessary qualification programs across the country.  Indeed in 2006 the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that there were more than 1,500 state approved training courses in practical nursing.  Since that time there have been a significant number of programs that have been designed specifically for learning online.

Most courses still however require a clinical aspect to the training which is difficult to undertake on a distance basis, so it is likely that attendance as some form of organized clinical training events will still be required. There are however many local vocation schools and technical LPN programs that offer complete courses or just specific aspects of the training regime as well as community colleges.

Once qualified LPN’s are able to undertake a wide variety of activities, from simple measurements for example taking a patients temperature or blood pressure, through to administering CPR on a patient who is suffering a cardiac arrest.  Most of the time however they will be administering basic care to elderly, infirm or recuperative patients in a non-hospital environment.

Payroll Stats For May 2010

Non-farm payroll employees saw an increase in average weekly earnings in May 2010 by 3.7% compared with May 2009. Year-over-year, this has been the most rapid increase since February 2008.

In recent months, the rate of earnings growth has spiked. May was the sixth months in a row where the year-over-year increase was at 2.3% or more. During the eight months before, year-over-year increases were 1.8% or less.

From May 2009-2010, Canada’s largest industrial sectors saw average or above average growth in average weekly earnings in professional, scientific, and technical services (4.3%); manufacturing (5.3%); wholesale trade (5.4%); food and accommodation services (6.5%); educational services (10.3%); and support, waste management, and remediation services (10.9%).

Every province saw an increase in average weekly earnings in 2010 (compared year-over-year). Rapid growth was seen in Prince Edward Island (5.9%), Saskatchewan (5.0%), Alberta (4.4%), and Nova Scotia (4.1%), while New Brunswick had the slowest growth rate at 2.3%.

The provinces of Alberta and Ontario had average weekly earnings greater than the national average, with overall weekly earnings at $985.17 and $874.66, respectively.

Payroll employment began to increase in August 2009. From that time, earnings have been close to or above the national average of 3.0% in all provinces except New Brunswick (0.8%), Manitoba (1.5%), and Quebec (2.4%).

Following three consecutive monthly gains in the total number of hours worked by hourly and salaried employees, there was a slight (0.2%) decline in these hours. Average weekly hours worked by hourly and salaried workers were at 32.9 hours, close to the average for May 2009.

Thus it would seem the people in Canada are, on average, working less and earning more, which is a great development that speaks to the ever-strengthening economy.

McLaren 1-2 at the Turkish F1 GP As Red Bulls Skewer Each Other

Time flies when you’re having fun and before you know it, another Grand Prix race has come and gone. This time, Lewis Hamilton driving for McLaren-Mercedes claimed victory at the Turkish Formula 1 Grand Prix held at Istanbul last weekend. It was Mr Hamilton’s first victory in a while (ten races). It was also a nightmare for Red Bull even though their drivers started in pole and in third position too. Hamilton started the race in second position. The nightmare was basically due to an overly enthusiastic Sebastian Vettel trying to overtake his teammate and pole sitter Mark Webber resulting in a crash.

Now before we get to that let’s start with a bit of trivia. Istanbul F1 Grand Prix of 2010 was Ferrari’s 800th race in Formula 1 by the way and they started it badly by qualifying in 8th and 12th place. So critiques and fans are thinking about what is wrong with both Alonso and Massa before the race started.

it was a good race for Lewis Hamilton as from the start he kept up the pressure on pole sitter Mark Webber only losing out to third position holder, Webber’s Red Bull teammate, Sebastian Vettel moving into second when the McLaren pitstop crew had a small problem during the tire change.

Now being someone who’s young, fired up and already a world champion, Hamilton continued the chase and kept up the pressure on Vettel. I suppose it was this relentless pressure and also the fact that Webber won the last two F1 Grand Prix races prior to this made Vettel try something drastic, like try fit his Red Bull into Webber’s Red Bull. This impulsive action basically caused him to crash out of the race and made Webber limp his way into the pits for repair work. This unfortunate turn of events (if you looked at it from Red Bull’s camp) was capitalized by both Hamilton and his team mate Jenson Button which took over first and second positions respectively.

Now these two world champions somehow nearly did some similar damage themselves by actually racing each other instead of pacing themselves to the end. Button actually too the lead on one occasion and they did rub into each other. But in the end, Hamilton pulled through and stayed in top position till the very end. Amazing. If both drivers of McLaren did the same mistake as the Red Bull ones then it would have been a real tale of not learning from other people’s mistakes. Actually I do not think they learnt from other people’s mistakes (in this case Red Bull’s blunder) as they still fought for the lead. McLaren was just plain lucky in my opinion. Anyway, Lewis Hamilton claims his first victory of the 2010 season.

Mark Webber somehow manages to still make third, looking a little depressed ahead of Michael Schumacher (it seems that the new modifications on the Mercedes-Brawn-Petronas made recently paid off), Nico Rosberg, Robert Kubica, Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso. Not a bad 800th outing for Ferrari considering they started in 8th and 12th as stated above.

Next race: Canada 13th June 2010

Teenagers and Energy Drinks

Just as popular as coffee or soda, energy drinks are making a huge impact on sales of beverage stimulants. With sales of more than two billion dollars, energy drinks have developed a very loyal following. Many of the energy drinks on the market contain large amounts of caffeine which has been a major concern for parents, since teenagers are a big market segment for the energy drink category.

By now most people know that caffeine is an addictive stimulant. Most people can not properly start their day without a cup (or two or three) of coffee or soda. As can be seen by the number of coffee shops on every corner, caffeine is a popular stimulant for many people.

The caffeine addiction is not limited to the adult population; many teenagers are also addicted to the stimulating properties of caffeine. This addiction has many teenagers hooked on energy drinks such as Red Bull and Monster to name a few. For most that look to energy drinks for a second wind, the true data on the beverage they are consuming may be staggering.

According to a clinical toxicologist with Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, it is recommended that teenagers limit their caffeine intake to 100 or 200 milligrams per day. Adults should limit intake to 200 or 300 milligrams per day. With this in mind, it should be surprising to people to learn that one serving of some of these drinks has about 3,000 milligrams of caffeine. Even more shocking is the fact that some of these beverages are sold in cans that are equivalent to 3 servings!

It is even harder for consumers to truly regulate the amount of caffeine they are consuming as many energy drink manufacturers do not label ingredients as being caffeine. These ingredients are labeled with their herbal name such as guarana.

Another marketing ploy that appeals to teenagers is the addition of alcohol in some energy drinks. Cleverly disguised in an ordinary can, these energy drinks contain more alcohol content than a can of beer! Other drinks are marketed as healthy since they have ingredients that are natural and healthy such as hoodia and ingredients that are in the best diet pills.

Bull Fighting in Spain

Whenever we think about Spain, a picture of a Bull-fighter with red cloth in his hand and bull charging towards it comes in our mind. Bull fighting has truly become the symbol of this European country.

The basis of bull fighting in Spain lies in an age old tradition in which people used to sacrifice a bull on the days of fiestas. The sacrifices used to be performed to please the God. This game originally started as a playful competition between people and their bulls. The person who used to take control of the bull was considered to be powerful and strong.

The professional form of this sport started in 711 A.D. to celebrate the crowning ceremony of King Alfonso VIII. At that time, this sport was played while riding a horse. It used to be a sport for aristocrats during those times. But King Felipe V banned the aristocrats from playing this sport as he thought that it will put a bad example in front of the people.

Once the aristocrats were banned from playing, common people started taking part in the Bull Fighting. As common people couldn’t afford to keep horses, they changed the rules of the game. Thus, the present version of the game was created in 1724. In this version, the player dodges the raging bull on foot and unarmed.

Ever since that time, bull fighting in Spain has been one of the most loved sports. Thousands of people flock the bull ring to watch this intense and entertaining competition between man and animal. The number of spectators of Bull fighting in Spain has crossed over 1 million every year.

Bull Fighting in Spain has taken shape of an organized sport. People find it extremely exciting to attend bull fighting matches. Thousands of people throng the stadiums for such matches, through out the year.

Bull fighting generally includes one unarmed matador and a raging bull. The matador is regarded as the greatest of sportsmen in the country as the act of jumping in to a ring with a huge ring requires a lot of courage. Many times, Matador can get seriously injured while fighting with the bull. This sport causes several deaths and disabling injuries every year. They are given highest of the honors by the government and many people treat them like superstars in Spain.

This is why, a bull fighting match is also known as the dance of death. The matador has to perform rehearsed and calculated moves to dodge bull’s attacks. One wrong move and the matador may get trampled under the bull’s feet or stabbed by its horns. But still, its popularity has only increased over the years.

Today, Bull Fighting has become a highly organized sport in Spain and many other countries have also started playing it. Even though, there are many organizations which consider this game as cruelty towards animals, this has not diminished the craze of people towards this sport.

Cut the Caffeine

For many of us, the average morning is akin to being an extra in a zombie movie. Millions of people stumble to work each day with stiff muscles, bleary eyes, and heavy breathing, all punctuated by low, repeating moans.

“Coffeeeeee…”

Once you get that first cup of coffee, the dull-grey world explodes into brilliant color (think office cubicles housing three Bollywood musicals at once) and we become Superman. Alert! Active! Blessedly awake! Unfortunately, a few ticks of the hour hand later we’re once again the Living Dead. The chair’s pushed back, the coffee pot is hit, and the cycle repeats itself.

Way too much of a good thing?

Caffeine, though something of a wonder drug, is getting abused. Taken in moderation, particularly in things like dark chocolate or black coffee, it can have health benefits. ‘Moderation,’ however, becomes an unfamiliar concept when you’re drinking a dozen cups of coffee a day. High blood pressure, anxiety, increased risk for cardiovascular disease, and increased risk of ulcers are a few of the problems associated with overconsumption.

The problem is, we need our caffeine; two thirds of Americans simply don’t get enough sleep, according to the National Sleep Foundation. For many, coffee won’t cut it, leading to increased consumption of energy drinks like Red Bull or the charmingly-named Cocaine. And the stuff is showing up where you’d least expect it: mints, chewing gum, donuts.

But there are plenty of strategies you can use to remain energized while avoiding excessive caffeine. It takes a little more effort than buying that mocha or opening that Coke, but you’re guaranteed to feel better than ever before.

Eat breakfast.

Yes, it’s a cliché, but breakfast remains the most important part of your day. Not only will a proper meal in the A.M. (not a chocolate bar and some soda pop) energize you for hours, it’ll help you keep your weight down–the body uses nutrients less efficiently when it wakes up, meaning you’ll retain fewer unneeded calories by having that food earlier in the day.

Ideal breakfast foods include oatmeal, high-fiber cereals, veggies, and whole-wheat toast. Because they contain so much fiber, it takes you longer to process the sugars inside, meaning your body gets a slow, steady flow of energy instead of one tidal wave. One massive jolt of caffeine will pep you up, sure, but once it wears off you’re left worse than when you started.

Eat when you’re hungry.

Three square meals a day may be neater on a schedule, but it sure ain’t healthier. Don’t be afraid of snacking between meals! Doing this maintains a reasonable amount of energy all day long. As an added bonus, you may lose some weight; counterintuitive as that sounds, spreading out your caloric intake means you’re less likely to overeat during “big” meals.

Bear in mind, this does not mean you should be munching down potato chips and cookies! What you snack on is just as important as the snacking itself.

Good snacks:

Fruit is loaded with energizing fructose, as well as healthy fiber and plenty of antioxidants. An apple with some peanut butter or a cool bunch of grapes can quickly take the place of that midday candy bar, and a yogurt-based fruit smoothie makes a great replacement for your three cans of soda.

Almonds and other nuts are superb snacks as well–they’re filling, crunchy, and bursting with omega-3 (that’s the fat we actually should eat). Yogurt and other low-fat dairy foods, too, provide much needed energy along with nutrients necessary to maintain your metabolism and keep your body healthy.

Eat these foods throughout the day, never overeating (gorging yourself leads to fatigue, like when you nod off at Thanksgiving). In addition, consider foods high in iron like steak once or twice a week; iron is important for energy, too. It’s okay to drink a cup or two of coffee along with all this, but if you find yourself downing seven hugelarge cups of espresso each day: cut back. And finally, most importantly…

Sleep.

Even with new wonder-drugs like Modafinil–which can keep a person up for 40 hours straight with no side-effects–sleep experts reiterate there is no substitute for a full night’s rest. The brain needs it, the body needs it, your very soul needs it. We aren’t machines; no matter what we put into our bodies to keep them running, if we don’t have sleep to go along with it we’ll eventually pay dearly.

So next time you reach for your coffee mug, consider having some fruit instead–and get some sleep once you get home from work!
